The healthcare destination of Wayanad
Leo Hospital was established in 1982 just after the formation of the Wayanad district in the year 1980.
Earlier Kalpetta was a panchayat and later it became the headquarters of Wayanad district. The DMO office and District Hospital are still located in Mananthavady. Formerly north Wayanad was part of Kannur district and south Wayanad with Kozhikode district. The population was about 6 Lakh comprising local people including tribes and those who have migrated from other districts of Kerala and neighboring districts of Tamilnadu and Karnataka. People belonging to different religions including Jains with multilingual, multicultural backgrounds give a cosmopolitan outlook. Gifted with natural fauna and flora, wildlife, rivers, rivulets, streams, waterfalls, Islands, freshwater lakes, dams and extensive tea gardens, coffee gardens, the spiral ghat roads and virgin forest with moderate climate made Wayanad a tourist destination. The famous tourist destination Ooty is 100 km, Mysore 140 km, Calicut 72 km, and Kannur airport 115 km away from Kalpetta. The health scenario was not satisfactory earlier as there was only one government dispensary and a few private hospitals in and around Kalpetta. People were dependent on Medical College, Calicut for managing major and complicated cases. Our Vision
